Surfboards are like vehicles for riding waves. At its most basic, a surfboard is shaped to help you paddle, catch waves, and maneuver on them. MyDeal offers soft and hard boards for beginners and experienced surfers. Our soft top surfboards are durable against dings, safer when you fall and great for anyone who is just starting. The hard tops have traditional fibreglass/epoxy construction, and offer better performance, but need a little more care.

Different Surfboard Types

Longboards (8-12 feet)

  • Best for beginners

  • More stable, easier to paddle

  • Great for small waves

  • Perfect for learning to stand up

  • More graceful, flowing style of surfing

Funboards/Malibu (7-8.5 feet)

  • Good for progressing beginners/intermediates

  • Mix of stability and maneuverability

  • Works in various wave conditions

  • Easier to paddle than shortboards

  • Good transition board

Shortboards (5.5-7 feet)

  • For advanced surfers

  • Super maneuverable

  • Better for steeper, faster waves

  • Harder to paddle and balance

  • Allows for radical turns and tricks

General Rules of Thumb for Surforad Sizes

Beginners: Board should be about 3 feet taller than you

Your weight matters more than height

More volume = more flotation = easier to paddle

Width affects stability (wider = more stable)

Thicker boards float better.

FAQs

What fins should you use?

Fins are like the rudder on a boat or the wheels on a skateboard - they help control how your surfboard moves through the water. Without fins, your board would just slide around with no direction. Your fin choice really depends on your style and board:

Setup Types:

  • Single fin: For longboards, smooth turns

  • Twin fin: Fast, loose feel, good for smaller waves

  • Thruster (3 fins): Most common, great all-around

  • Quad (4 fins): Fast, good drive, works well in hollow waves

  • 5-fin: Versatile, lets you switch between thruster and quad

How long should the surfboard leash be?

Your leash should be roughly the same length as your board, maybe slightly longer. Here's why:

Too short: Can make your board snap back at you

Too long: Can get tangled and drag in the water

Specific Guidelines:

Shortboard: Equal to board length

Longboard: 1-2 feet longer than board

Big wave riding: Add extra foot for safety

Competition: Sometimes slightly shorter for quick board recovery
