Rashies (also called rash guards) are specialized athletic shirts designed for water activities. They're made from materials like nylon or spandex that protect your skin from sun damage and chafing - which is actually how they got their name, as they prevent the rash that can develop from your skin rubbing against equipment like surfboards or kayaks. They come in different sleeve lengths and can be worn alone or under a wetsuit.

Wetsuits are more comprehensive pieces of water gear made from neoprene. They work by trapping a thin layer of water between your skin and the suit - your body heats this water, creating insulation that keeps you warm in cold conditions.

UPF Ratings and Different Fabrics

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings indicate how effectively a fabric blocks harmful UV radiation. A UPF 50+ rating, which you'll find in high-quality rashies and water gear, blocks 98% of UV rays. This is particularly crucial for water activities since UV rays not only hit you directly from above but also reflect off the water's surface, increasing exposure.

Regarding fabrics, each material brings specific benefits-

  • Nylon excels in durability and abrasion resistance, making it ideal for activities where you might encounter rough surfaces.

  • Polyester offers excellent moisture-wicking properties and maintains its shape well, even after repeated use and washing.

  • Spandex (also known as elastane or Lycra) provides the essential stretch and flexibility you need for comfortable movement on the water.

Many high-performance water garments use blends of these materials - for instance, a common combination is 80% nylon with 20% spandex for durability with stretch.

Can You Wear Rashies Under Your Wetsuits

Yes, you can absolutely wear a rashie under your wetsuit, and there are several good reasons to do this:

  • It provides an extra layer of insulation for added warmth

  • It helps prevent chafing from your wetsuit, especially around the neck and underarm areas

  • It makes the wetsuit easier to put on and take off, as the rashie creates a smoother surface for the wetsuit to slide over

  • It adds an extra layer of protection if your wetsuit gets damaged during use.
