A paddle board is essentially a large, stable board (bigger than a surfboard) that you stand on while using a long paddle to propel yourself through the water. They are like a mix between surfing and kayaking, but you're upright with a great view of everything around you. You can do it on lakes, rivers, oceans, and even your local pond.

The cool thing about paddle boarding is that almost anyone can do it. If you can balance well enough to walk down the sidewalk, you can probably paddle board (especially on calm water). And unlike surfing, you don't need waves - though you can surf waves if you want to!

The boards themselves come in two main types: solid (like traditional surfboards) and inflatable (which you can deflate and throw in your trunk). Most beginners start with an inflatable because they're easier to transport and store, plus they're usually a bit cheaper. They typically range from 10 to 14 feet in length.

Inflatable vs Solid Paddle Boards

INFLATABLE PADDLE BOARDS:

Think of these like heavy-duty inflatable mattresses, but way more rigid. When properly inflated, they're surprisingly stiff and stable. Most inflate to about 15 PSI, which makes them firm enough to support you easily.

They are portable and easy to store in apartments or small spaces.

More forgiving if you bump into rocks or fall on the board

Great for travel. Since these boards are easily portable and can be stored easily, they are your best option when travelling.

It is important to remember that inflatable boards will take 5-10 minutes to inflate, but electric pumps definitely speed up the process.

SOLID (EPOXY) PADDLE BOARDS:

These are more like traditional surfboards - made with an EPS foam core and fibreglass/epoxy outer shell.

Solid boards offer better performance and there is no setup time - just grab and go.

They last longer and glide through the water with ease. Moreover, they are great for surfing waves.

However, keep in mind, that solid boards are not easily portable and require more storage space. Plus, they are heavier to carry compared to inflatable ones.

What is SUP?

SUP stands for Stand Up Paddleboarding! It's often shortened to "SUP". The basic idea is you stand upright on a large, stable board and use a long paddle to move through the water.

Paddle Boards Ideal For Beginners

  • For beginners, you basically want a board that:

  • Is really stable (so you don't fall off too much)

  • Is easy to use

  • Can handle different types of water (lakes, calm ocean, etc.)

  • Is forgiving when you make mistakes

These are called "all-around" boards because they're good for a bit of everything. Think of them like a good pair of sneakers - they might not be the best for any one specific thing, but they're great for learning and trying everything out.

You have two main choices when buying your first board:

  • Inflatable boards (you pump them up like a really sturdy air mattress)

  • Hard boards (solid, like a surfboard)

  • Most beginners go for inflatable boards because:

  • They're easier to carry around

  • You can store them in a closet

  • They're more forgiving if you fall on them

  • Usually cheaper to buy
