Kayaks and canoes are both small boats that you paddle through the water, but they have some key differences. A kayak is typically enclosed with a smaller cockpit where you sit with your legs stretched out in front of you. You use a double-bladed paddle, meaning there's a blade on each end that you dip into the water alternately on either side.
Canoes, on the other hand, are more open boats where you sit or kneel on a bench. They're generally wider than kayaks and have higher sides. In a canoe, you use a single-bladed paddle on one side of the boat (though you can switch sides). They're great for carrying more gear or people, which is why they're popular for family trips or camping adventures.
Both can be used on lakes, rivers, or even the ocean, depending on their design. Kayaks tend to be better for one or two people and are often faster and more maneuverable, making them popular for activities like whitewater paddling or sea touring. Canoes are typically more stable and roomier, perfect for leisurely trips on calm water with family or friends.
Understanding Kayaks & Canoes
Recreational kayaks are stable, easy to use, and great for calm waters like lakes. Sit-on-top kayaks are just as they sound - you sit on top rather than inside, making them perfect for beginners or warm weather. Then you have touring kayaks (also called sea kayaks), which are longer and built for covering distances on open water or seas. Whitewater kayaks are shorter, super maneuverable, and designed specifically for tackling rapids.
There are also fishing kayaks, which come with special features like rod holders and storage for tackle, and inflatable kayaks that you can pack down for easy transport. Tandem kayaks are built for two people to paddle together.
For canoes, you've got several main types too. Recreational canoes are the most common - they're stable, versatile, and good for family trips on lakes and calm rivers. River canoes are designed to handle moving water and mild rapids, with features that help them turn quickly. Racing canoes are long and narrow, built for speed rather than stability.
There are also expedition canoes, which are larger and designed to carry lots of gear for long trips. Whitewater canoes are shorter and more maneuverable for handling rapids, while solo canoes are specially designed for one person to paddle efficiently.
What Type of Kayak is Best For Beginners?
For beginners with kayaks, a recreational sit-on-top kayak is your best bet. These are stable, easy to get on and off, and you don't feel confined since you're sitting on top rather than inside the kayak. They're typically wider which makes them more stable - perfect while you're learning to balance. A good length for beginners is around 9-12 feet. These kayaks are ideal for calm waters like lakes or slow-moving rivers.
What Type of Canoe is Best for Beginners?
For starting out with canoes, look for a basic recreational canoe that's around 15-17 feet long. Aluminium canoes are popular for beginners because they're durable (they can take a few bumps without damage) and relatively affordable. They're also stable and easy to handle. The wider the canoe, the more stable it will be, which is important when you're learning. Many people start with what's called a "lake canoe" - these are designed for calm water and are very forgiving while you learn paddling techniques.

Only one disappointing thing is that it doesn't come with a Bag to carry it in. Did find 140 ltr bag at tent world that does the job. Looking forward to taking it out more.

Great Kayak. Inflation ports should be relocated for better deflation when acking up. Fishing rod holders should be angled forward, not rearward. However all in all very good value for money from MyDeal. Appears to be very durable. Recommended purchase Would recommend.

I think it's a little rude to sell it as a package and not put in the motor mounting, Can't use the motor without the mounting. Unhappy.
