(Using the rosary, pray)
Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle's Creed.
For each of the five decades (on each Our Father bead of the rosary, pray) Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
(On each of the 10 Hail Mary beads, pray) For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Concluding prayer (repeat 3 times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
The message of the Divine Mercy is simple: God loves us, and He wants us to know that His mercy is greater than our sins. This message and devotion of Divine Mercy are based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun, who wrote a diary recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. The purpose of the Divine Mercy devotion is to seek mercy from God, trust completely in Jesus, and be merciful to others.
The image of Divine Mercy came about as a vision that appeared to St. Faustina on February 22, 1931. She saw an image of the risen Christ, bearing the marks of the crucifixion on His hands, feet and side. Two rays of light emanate from the pierced heart of Jesus, one red and one white. The red ray repesents blood for the life of souls. The white ray represents water that enables souls to be righteous. Beneath the image, the words, "Jesus, I trust in You" appear, confirming trust in the mercy of Christ. She asked an artist to paint the image from her description, and the resulting image illustrates and reminds us of the message of Divine Mercy.
Sister (now Saint) Faustina was canonized in 2000 by Pope (now Saint) John Paul II, who also instituted Divine Mercy Sunday as the first Sunday after Easter. At her canonization, Pope St. John Paul II said, "I pass [this message] on to all people, so that they will learn to know ever better the true face of God and the true face of their neighbor. In fact, the love of God and love of one's neighbor are inseparable."
