Sandalwood is scientifically known as Santalum album and is known in Sanskrit as Chandanam or Srigandha . It means something which has a heavenly smell. It is a parasitic tree and is mostly found in the southern part of India.
Since the past few thousand years, sandal wood has been used for medicinal purposes in India , especially in the Ayurveda system . It has great importance in religious ceremonies. Hindus offer sandalwood paste to God every day and put it on the forehead. In temples, devotees are offered sandalwood paste after doing poojas. Its fragrance is heavenly and one of the few in nature.
Sandalwood is a part of Indian cultural heritage. Statues made from sandalwood are world famous. Various musical instruments, spiritual incense and creams are made out of sandal wood. It has a wonderful fragrance which last for several years.

Santalum album
Sandalwood is the name of a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades.
Native to the southern regions of India, growing best on dry, stony, but fertile soils. Other species widely scattered from the Malay Archipelago to Australia and the Pacific islands including Hawaii. A small tree up to about 25 to 40 ft in height, with trunk diameters usually 4 to 6 in. Heartwood light yellowish brown when freshly cut, turning dark brown on exposure, and with further aging, to a dark reddish brown; sapwood whitish. Texture very fine and even; grain straight, sometimes wavy; dull to somewhat lustrous, with oily feel; heartwood with a strong fragrant scent that persists, without characteristic taste.
The little berries are a favourite to birds and the flowers are purplish and nearly inconspicuous.
