Is it ethical to use animal hides?

Animal hides exported from Africa and imported to Australia are subject to strict quarantine and ethical requirements. We only use hides from animals that die from natural causes and are not bred for their hides specifically. These stunning hides are extremely robust and last a long time. You might even hand your hide down to another generation so utilising them is better for all concerned than any mass produced petro-chemical based product. It stores the carbon and displaces many other products that are not good for the environment and last a fraction of the time.

How do I care for my hide rug?

Animal hide rugs are a no-fuss easy to clean rug, which is one of the reasons we love them so much. For normal cleaning care use only a white damp cloth that is colourfast. Vacuum regularly with the soft brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner to remove dust and grit, then wipe with a soft, colour-fast cloth dampened with water. This should be done as often as necessary or at least every 2-3 weeks.

Do not use detergents, solvents, abrasives, leather cleaners or suede cleaners. Do not dry clean or machine wash. Protect from direct sunlight and heat sources, both direct and through heating vents. Avoid sharp objects.

Hide rugs are naturally repellent to stains. Absorb wet spills as soon as possible with a white dry cloth and then follow with normal cleaning care.
