Remember That Wine And Spirits Are Different

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other fruits. The natural sugars in the fruit are converted into alcohol by yeast during the fermentation process. Plus, wine typically has a lower alcohol content, usually ranging from about 9% to 15% ABV (alcohol by volume).

Spirits, on the other hand, are alcoholic beverages that have undergone distillation after fermentation. Distillation is a process that separates alcohol from the fermented liquid (like wine or beer) by heating and then cooling it. This concentrates the alcohol, resulting in a higher ABV. Spirits generally have a much higher alcohol content than wine, typically around 40% ABV or more.

Now there is a reason why port wine falls into the spirits or stronger liquor category. Port is a fortified wine. This means that a neutral grape spirit (like brandy) is added to the wine before fermentation is complete. Adding the spirit stops the fermentation process, leaving some residual sugar in the wine and increasing the alcohol content. This means, port typically has a higher alcohol content than regular wine, usually around 19% to 20% ABV.
