A fine old French Baroque Violin, circa 1770.
Probably made in Paris around 1770. The top is made from irregular and beautiful grain lines. The back is made fromtwo pieces, of poorly flamed maple, with faint curl ascending from the center joint. The ribs, neck and scroll are from the same wood, and original to the instrument. The varnish is a nice aged brown, and is worn at places, expected from a well played violin. The plates are thin, and corners rounded by age, The scroll is sumptuous, carved in the French late 18th century tradition, beautiful with Character.
The violin is in a restored setup condition, ready to play. There are some old repairs on the top, including one at the right of the sound post, cleated inside, and solid. There are some woodworm repairs on the lower left of the back, and on the left edge of the same. All are well secured, and the violin is ready to play. There is a maple saddle on the neck, very well made, to bring it to the modern playing standard, and the neck has been reset.
The violin has been completely gone over and has a new setup, including a new set of Rosewood and bone heart shaped pegs, in the baroque style, a rosewood and ebony tailpiece, a rosewood chinrest, a new Despiau bridge and a set of Thomastik Dominant strings.
On the inside back can be found a label of " Giovanni Grancino in Contrada Largha di milano al signa corona 1727"
above the label is an old written name "Michelot" Michelot was a Parisian maker in the middle to late 18th century, and while we do not know his work, it would seem this attribution to be right, placing the violin being made around 1770
