The grinder on a home machine grinds way less consistently that a cafe machine. And the pressure and temperature on a home machine is also way less consistent. It can still work. But we need to take as much care as we can preparing our puck to reduce the chances of our shot "channeling".
Do you find that sometime your coffee is great and then without changing any of the settings on your machine the next day the coffee is watery and sour? That is channeling.
Channeling is where water runs through some parts of the puck faster than others due to clumps of ground coffee or uneven tamping causing gaps in the puck. This results in the extraction running faster and under extracting, resulting in a sour taste.
