Read up a bit about waxed canvas if you're not familiar with it: it's a very tight weave, it's naturally water resistant, it weathers beautifully and, in time, it'll develop a patina more akin to leather than fabric. It's easy to clean and can be maintained with a wax-based leather conditioner.
