How To Select The Right Pot Plants For Your Home
Not sure which pots & planters to incorporate into your home or backyard? We’re here to help!
When you buy a plant, it usually comes in the basic black nursery pots, which aren’t overly exciting or stylish. That’s where pots and planters come in. Pots & planters are a great way to enhance a space indoors or outdoors. But finding the right ones for your plants isn’t the most straightforward task. Other than the look, you need to ensure your pot has good drainage and is the right size and material. Don’t worry though; our simple step by step guide will help you find the perfect pots for your plants!
Location, Location, Location!
Finding a suitable planter starts with determining its location. Is it for an indoor or outdoor plant? Pots and planters are made for different environments. If your pot is for the outside, you’ll need a weather-proof option, whereas if your plant is for the indoors, you can choose a more decorative pot. The location will also help you determine what size potter will fit in the space.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget about the planter’s weight – in case you have to move it.
Drainage is a must!
To avoid overwatering your plants, especially indoor ones, it’s absolutely crucial your potter has drainage holes. These will allow excess water to drain out rather than drowning the plant causing it to die.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use those decorative pots that don’t have holes. In fact, these pots are actually an excellent way to hide those ugly black nursery planters and prevent overwatering. With a decorative pot to hide the dull nursery one, your pots will always look stylish in the space but also practical!
Don’t Forget to Consider the Material of the Pot
Pots and planters come in a range of alternative materials to suit different tastes and styles, including plastic, wood, metal, and ceramic.
1. Wooden Pots & Planters
If you have a rustic vibe in your home, then you might like some wooden pots and planters. Wood has excellent water retention and prevents root rot which is really important for your plants. They’re also highly durable and stylish too.
2. Metal Pots & Planters
If you’re looking for a pot for a large plant that needs more stability than metal pots and planters are the choice for you. These are perfect for the outdoors and although they’re generally heavier than other pots, they are great for plants that like heat and humidity.
3. Plastic Pots & Planters
Plastic pots are a great way to save money, and they come in a massive variety of colours, designs and sizes to suit every plant. They’re lightweight, perfect for any indoor space and many models even come with drainage included for convenience.
4. Ceramic Pots & Planters
If you tend to overwater your plants, then ceramic pots are for you. These practical pots draw the moisture from the soil around the plant to ensure you never over water again and are a fantastic investment for any outdoor or indoor plant.
Planter Size
Your plant’s size will determine the scale of pot you can buy. To find the right size, the planter should:
– Fit the plant (as well as its nursery pot if you’re looking for a decorative pot).
– Provide extra room for future growth.
– Be no more than half the height of the plant as to not draw the eye away.
Smaller pots are better for bookshelves, cupboards, and to fill any little space, whereas bigger planters can create a statement look, fill big empty areas and are an excellent way to avoid clutter with lots of little plants.
Tip: If you’re struggling with placement, as a general rule of thumb you can either clutter together three average pots or one big, stand-alone one.
Consider Your Existing Style
To avoid a clash of colours and style, it’s really important to consider you’re existing themes whether that be rustic, chic, modern or minimalistic, before you buy any decorative pots.
Pot Planter Colour
Alternate colours interact with spaces and plants differently. Be careful buying bold coloured pot planters as they can draw attention away from the plant itself. Sometimes it’s the simplest of pots that will work best. Colours like white, black, or grey will draw the eye to the plant and can work in any space, so no matter where you move the plant, you don’t have to change around the pot it’s in.
Tip: if you’re grouping different plants together, don’t forget to add additional colours and materials to add appeal rather than a clash to the area.
