Google Phone Buying Guide

Smartphones are a big part of our lives and it is safe to say that everyone is looking for the best in the market. Whether it is Apple or Android, each smartphone in the market has something good to offer. Google phones have been a fairly new addition to the league of smartphones in marketing making a debut with Google Pixel in 2016. But it has made sure to develop models that are at par with companies like Apple and Samsung. Hence, we will be focusing on the different what is the best Google Pixel phone to buy.

What is the Best Google Pixel Phone to Buy?

At the moment, Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models would be considered the best of the best in Google phones. Two of the most important reasons why people tend to lean towards google phones are the software and the phone camera. The two new models possess Google’s new 2nd Generation Tensor CPU and a three-lens camera that includes a 48 MP telephoto lens along with a 50 MP main camera and an ultrawide 12 MP sensor. Add to that their amazing camera features like Night Sight, Photo Unblur, Motion Mode and the famous Magic Eraser.

Google Phones are a lot about utility and cost-effectiveness. They aim to provide the smoothest smartphone experience in the market. Moreover, they offer all these features and more at a cheaper rate than Samsung and Apple which makes them popular among Android users.

The Google Tensor Chip

This little chip is what makes this smartphone- SMART! The basic philosophy behind the Tensor chip is that your phone should understand you and your needs. Hence, the Google Tensor chip combines machine learning and artificial intelligence to offer you features such as live translation of messages and videos without an internet connection. This chip is another reason why Pixel has unique camera features like the Magic Eraser or Photo Unblur. According to Google, their phones can “distinguish a tree from a person in a photo, or understand if the picture is blurry and in need of a touch-up.”

Along with enhancing the phone’s battery, allowing faster communication and excellent camera features, the Tensor chip has a separate core that has the Titan M2 chip which enhances the security of Pixel phones.

The Titan M2 Chip

You use your phone for just about everything in your life, whether it is accessing your bank account, emails or any personal information. This is why the Titan M2 chip is one of the most important additions to the Google Pixel phones. The chip offers multiple layers of security that protect your personal data, authentication and extra protection on anything you download, browse or share.

How to Buy a Google Phone?

Always take a look at what the different models have to offer and what you need. Know beforehand the type of battery life you require, if you’ll be taking a lot of photos and if you’ll be gaming or streaming movies on the phone.

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Storage: 128 GB / 256 GB

Front: 10.8 MP; Rear Camera: 50 MP wide (main camera), 12MP ultrawide (with autofocus), 48MP telephoto

Colours: Hazel, Snow, Obsidian

Starting with the latest model, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has faster and more efficient processing compared to the older models. It has a 6.7-inch screen size and a resolution of 1440 x 3120 along with a 5000 mAh battery life. The battery is said to last 24 hours and about 72 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver mode. Along with fast charging, this phone also possesses the Battery Share feature that allows it to charge other devices wirelessly. This reverse charging technology has been around since the release of the Google Pixel 6. It only works with Qi-certified devices and of course, drains the battery of your phone.

One of this phone’s most impressive features is the triple rear camera lens. The 48-megapixel telephoto zoom lens offers a 5x optical zoom feature. Another exciting feature would be the Macro focus mode that allows you to zoom in on objects that are up to 3 cm away and a 30x Super zoom for objects that are far away. Additionally, other camera features include Photo Unblur, Top Shot, Cinematic Pan, Motion auto-focus, Magic Eraser and more.

This model also offers features such as live translation that allows you to translate to chat in real-time in approximately 55 languages.

Google Pixel 6 Pro

Storage: 128GB or 256GB

Front Camera: 11MP; Rear Camera: 50MP wide (main camera), 12MP ultrawide + 48MP telephoto lens

Colours: Cloudy White, Sorta Sunny and Stormy Black

Many of the features on the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel 6 Pro model are similar. The overall dimensions of the phones are ever so slightly different but the display screen is the same size. As far as the processors are concerned, the Google Pixel 6 Pro does not come with the Google Tensor G2 chip but it’s only slightly slower than the Google Pixel 7 Pro. Instead, it has the first-generation Google Tensor chip. Hence, the overall performance of the phone is still excellent. Another thing to note though is that the Pixel 6 Pro has 5003 mAh battery life which is slightly more than the Pixel 7 Pro.

The camera comes with almost the same features as the Pixel 7 Pro. It does not have features such as Photo Unblur and Macro Focus along with the 5x optical zoom and the Super res zoom as part of a telephoto lens. But if you’re a fan of interesting design elements then the Pixel 6 Pro has something new for you. The three rear camera lenses sit horizontally on a raised strip giving the phone a bit of a futuristic look. While it also significantly increases the weight of the phone, it gives the overall look of the phone a slight edge over the Pixel 7 Pro.

Google Pixel 7

Storage: 128 GB / 256 GB

Front Camera: 10.8 MP; Rear Camera: 50 MP wide (main camera), 12MP ultrawide

Colours: Lemongrass, Snow and Obsidian

Noticeably smaller than the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, the display screen for the Google Pixel 7 is 6.3 inches. It has the same Google Tensor G2 processor as the Pixel 7 Pro. The most noticeable difference would be the camera. This handset only has a dual camera with a main camera lens and an ultrawide lens. However, it still possesses almost all the camera features of the Pixel 7 Pro except for the Macro Focus. Additionally, just like the Pixel 7 Pro, this model also has a 92.8° ultrawide field of view for the front camera. This makes it easier to take amazing group selfies.

As far as the battery life is concerned, it can last beyond 24 hours and 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver like Pixel 7 Pro even though the battery life is 4355 mAh.

Google Pixel 6a

Storage: 128 GB

Front Camera: 10.8 MP; Rear Camera: 12.2 MP dual-pixel, 12MP ultrawide

Colours: Charcoal, Chalk and Sage

This handset is considered one of the best options among mid-range smartphones. The 4410 mAh battery lasts a whole day and the processor, i.e. Google Tensor, keeps the phone running perfectly even while gaming. However, when it comes to the camera the higher models are better. That does not mean that the cameras in this phone are bad. We would say that in the middle price range, the cameras on this model are pretty good. You will still get most of the camera features you get on the Pixel 6 Pro.

Additionally, as far as screen resolution goes, you get the standard 1080 x 2400 but with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The refresh rate refers to the number of times per second the display can draw an image. So, a refresh rate of 60 Hz means that the image on the screen is being refreshed 60 times. The newer models, however, boast a refresh rate of 120-Hz which makes a big difference.

Google Pixel 6

Storage: 128GB

Front Camera: 8MP; Rear Camera: 50MP (main camera), 12MP ultrawide

Colours: Stormy Black, Kinda Coral and Sorta Seafoam

The Google Pixel 6 is a step up from the Pixel 6a. The full-screen display is slightly bigger at 6.4 inches instead of the 6.1 inches display of the Pixel 6a. It also comes with fast wireless charging and the Battery Share feature.

The Pixel 6 is the first model to have the Google Tensor chip. Changing over to a new processor resulted in Up to 80% faster performance than the previous model- Pixel 5. This change also resulted in features like “At a Glance” which shows any important messages, notifications or reminders on the screen.

Google Pixel 5

Storage: 128GB

Front Camera: 8MP; Rear Camera: 12MP (main camera) and 16MP ultrawide

Colours: Black, Sage

HD resolution with a 6-inch screen, the Google Pixel 5 is considered an excellent option for someone who wants a phone with a compact design and good specs. The rear camera has two lenses that allow you to shoot 4k videos. You get wireless charging, good memory capacity along with a dust and water-resistant phone.

Google Pixel 4 XL

Storage: 64GB/128GB

Front Camera: 8MP; Rear Camera: 12.2MP dual-pixel and 16MP telephoto camera

Colours: Black, White and Orange

Among the cheaper models, the Google Pixel 4 XL would be on top of the list. One of the most noticeable differences between this model and the Pixel 5 is the screen size. The Pixel 4 XL comes with a much larger screen of 6.3 inches and a resolution of 1440 x 3040. Even the processor of the Pixel 4 XL is a bit more powerful than the Pixel 5. The Pixel 4 XL uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with an Octa-Core processor compared to Pixel 5’s 765G with Octa-Core.

Their camera features are very similar, so you can still shoot 4k videos and photos. However, the quality goes down slightly on the battery life and unlike all the models mentioned before, this handset does not support 5G.

Google Pixel 4a 5G

Storage: 128GB

Front Camera: 8MP; Rear Camera: 12.2MP dual-pixel and 16MP ultrawide

Colours: Black and Barely Blue

If 5G is a must for you, then you can always go for the Google Pixel 4a 5G model. Launched in November 2020, this handset has a screen size of 6.2 inches and a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340. The battery on this one is more powerful than the Pixel 4a model and the camera is a step up as well with a dual pixel and ultrawide lens.

Are Google Phones Worth Buying?

There are indeed several smartphones out there for you. However, despite being a recent addition to the world of smartphones, the Google Pixel is as good as the next model. While the features and specifications of their latest models are top-notch, here are a few more reasons why should buy a Google Pixel:

  • Always be the first to get a software update. Android is Google’s baby, so you know that any updates to the software will get to you first. Moreover, unlike many other Android phones, Google phones are guaranteed to get three years’ worth of software updates. This is noteworthy for the simple reason that most Android phones are allowed a maximum of two updates or less.
  • One of the best Android phone cameras. Google uses a combination of AI and the hardware installed in the phone (ultrawide and telephoto lens) camera. This results in one of the finest cameras you will come across on a smartphone.
  • You get the purest form of Android. There are many Android phones in the market that run on the same operating system. However, most other phones tend to customise the software to fit their brand better. With Google Pixel, you get to experience the Android operating system in its purest form.
