Decorating your home with different furniture pieces, and accessories such as rugs, curtains, plants and more, is the norm. We all do it. The walls of your home are also part of this whole decoration process. Walls painted in different colours or covered in wallpaper can add a real sense of drama to the entire house. But for those who prefer to fill their walls with something else, we have you covered. We have gathered a few tips on how you can style wall art around the house.
The Centrepiece
The most loved way of arranging wall art in your home is by making it the centrepiece in a room, especially if it’s a big painting or artwork. You can either choose an artwork that works well with the furniture of the room or one that is entirely different from its surroundings. For your living room, you can place your centrepiece above a sideboard. Place your furniture and other elements such as lamps in a way that surrounds the wall art making it the centre of attention.
For the bedroom, the idea of a centrepiece is the same. Place it right above the bed as that will be the central piece of furniture in the room. As far as the rest of the room is concerned, the same living room rules apply. Everything should be pointing towards the centrepiece.
A Neat Line-Up
When things sit perfectly in line with each it is so satisfying to look at. It is like playing Tetris, trying to piece together furniture and aligning it with the decorative pieces around them. Whether it is aligned with the size of the furniture or aligned at the centre, wall art can look really good when set up in neat lines.
Align with Furniture
There are two ways to align your wall art with the furniture in the room. The wall art should either take up two-thirds of the full width of the furniture or it should go slightly beyond the width as shown in the image above. The idea is to align the wall art but not at the exact width of the furniture piece. The slight variation in placement adds depth. The two-thirds set-up will draw more attention to the wall art while the other style will draw more attention to the piece of furniture.
Align The centre
When you’re hanging more than one wall art in a room, you need to maintain some sort of balance between the different pieces. One of the easiest ways to do this is by aligning them through the centre line. Line up the centres in one straight line which is ideal when you’re working with wall art of different sizes.
Not As Careless As You Think
You may have come across many households where an entire wall is dedicated to framed photographs or paintings. This may be in the living room, lounge or the wall along a staircase. You can do the same, with the styling methods we have mentioned below.
An Art Window
One way of displaying multiple pieces of wall art is through symmetry. Find pieces that are the same size and place them all together in a window-like display as shown above. Instead of four frames, you can always go for six and create a grid structure for an organised look.
Asymmetrical wall art
Create an eclectic setup by placing multiple framed pieces in one area but in a haphazard way. Space it out and ensure that there is plenty of negative space. There should be no set structure or shape to how the wall art is placed on the wall. You can have wall art and photographs of different sizes just placed together. If you’re just going to place paintings or digital art in the asymmetrical style, we recommend going for similar colours, styles or drawings. With photographs, you can choose a specific theme to be displayed in the area such as family photographs taken at the beach.
Stay in Shape
Balance out each side. Select a specific shape that you want to stick to, a rectangular shape is usually the most flattering. Then place all your wall art within that shape, balancing both sides being the main goal. This is a great way to display artwork from your favourite artists. You can have variations of different art styles displayed this way.
It’s All About Syncing
How you decorate the common areas of your home makes a huge difference. Using the right decoration for these areas is crucial. The living room, entryway and dining area are where you can mix and match your wall art with the furniture to enhance the overall look of the room.
Blend with the Surroundings
It is always a great idea to match your wall art with the furniture around it. If you have a lot of rattan furniture, a wooden sideboard and a jute rug adorning the room, then it would be a great idea to go for artwork in the same colours. Additionally, you can opt for wall art that has a wooden frame in the same colour as the furniture. This ends up giving the room a very monochromatic look. You can also add wall tapestries or wall hangings in the same colours to complete the look.
Enhance surrounding decor
Do you use plants as a way to decorate your rooms? Then we have got the perfectly artistic decoration idea for you. Adding plants to a neutral-coloured room is a great way to add some vibrancy to the area. You can add to that by hanging paintings of leaves, trees or even flowers on the walls. Just a few pieces would do the trick.
A Little Bit of Contrast
Colour-coding is crucial whether you’re going for the white, blue and green combo of the Hamptons style or the beige, sand and cream combo of the Cottagecore style for your home. While matching colours give you a perfectly harmonious look, contrasting colours can add freshness to the room.
As seen in the image, the natural colour of the furniture is contrasted by the darker colour of the wall art. You can also flip this around and have furniture of a darker shade paired with bright and vibrant wall art. Ideally, using just one or two artworks would do the trick.
